Thanks Lars
Never mind the layout (of your reply) It was easily read anyway.
Thanks for the answer. It helps me a lot, in the understanding process. Now I give it a try.

Hey Ole,
The problem you encountered is the way Microsoft build their aircraft. The textures are mirrored, so they only need half as much disk space to fully texture the model. Of course, this is a repainters hell, as the 2 sides of the aircraft are always exactly the same this way, and text is mirrored. no way around it. That's the reason I don't repaint the default aircraft. Not all of them behave this way, but many do.
On other aircraft, you will always see 2 wings, 2 fuselages... so every side can have it's own colors.
Programs you need: an image editing program is the bare minimum. I use Photoshop CS3, with the Nvidia DDS plug in, to convert my images to DDS files (smaller in size and a lot faster to load in fsx than bitmaps, and better quality, so always use DDS in stead of BMP) another good program is the free dxtbmp. this makes it very easy to edit the alpha layers of your paints, if you want to do this.
The easiest way to start (I think) is choose an aircraft you like and try to find a repaint kit for it (most payware aircraft have those somewhere) or an all white livery. just look at the paintkit to see where what section of your aircraft can be found (wings, fuselage, tail...) and start painting! when you think you have something, or just want to test, save your edited files as dds (don't forget to save the psd first, as this is the source file of your work) and import into FSX. fire up fsx, and look at your aircraft! most of the time, you'll see you have to change something (or everything), so just open those psd files you saved, and edit them.
a good help can be finished files: if you don't know where a section of the aircraft is, or you don't know what side of your texture should be up, just open an existing texture of that aircraft, and look...
I learned repainting not very organized: I just went in to it, head first :p in the end it worked out, but if you google for repaint tutorials, you'll find lots!
I hope this helps a little

Lars.
I always wanted to start up on repainting, but dont know how to get about it. I have gotten as far as to put some ads (from FSFlyingschool) on the wings and sides of a Learjet, using some downloaded freeware program on the web (DDS converter or something, it was called), and Photoshop, but when I put something on one wind, it seems to be duplicated - and mirrored on the other wing, looking ridiculous.
How do you put something on one wing without having it mirrored on the other one?
Or in other words. A crash course in basic repainting (what programs do I need, and how do I start?)

if interested, sceenshots in my repaints photo album, or the package here on FSXW, or on the Captain Sim site.
